XPde

XPde is a full desktop environment designed just for Linux on x86 systems. It’s perfect for Windows XP users who are new to Linux. Think of it as a friendly bridge that makes switching over easier without all the extra fuss.

What Makes XPde Special?

Now, let’s get one thing straight: XPde keeps things simple. There’s no clipboard sharing between Gtk and Qt apps, and it doesn’t try to mimic Windows applications. It’s focused on being a desktop environment, plain and simple!

What's New in This Release?

The latest update brings some cool features:

• The desktop now uses PNG with an Alpha channel, so you can pick any icons you like and use them anywhere!


• The icon theme has been updated to the latest crystal svg format. Not all icons are included yet, but don’t worry—only the important ones are there.


• For fonts, we’ve switched to Bitstream Vera, which looks a lot like Tahoma.


• We’re using QTheme from Andreas Hausladen for an even better look! You can check it out here.


• There’s still more work in progress, but we’re getting there!


• The desktop now runs on an XPShellListView control. This means it will help build the explorer using the XPListView control while keeping an updated list of files in your directories without constantly checking.


• The performance has improved significantly! We’ve spent time optimizing the code so that it runs faster even on machines with lower resources.


• The taskbar got a complete makeover! Now built with bitmaps, it looks fresh and is super easy to theme.


• Lastly, the window manager has also been revamped! You can now use themes for rounded window frames too!
