The Z-machine Preservation Project is a cool Java tool that helps you run Z-code. It's designed to be easy to understand and work with, making it perfect for both beginners and those who know their stuff.

So, what exactly is the Z-machine? Well, it's basically a core system that runs independently of any specific user interface. This means you can interact with it in various ways! Plus, all its behaviors are well-documented and tested through simple cases, so you know it works like it should.

  • Built from scratch using Java 5

  • Supports all story file versions (V6 is off in version 1.5)

  • You can even run it as a Java applet in your web browser!

  • Saves and reads games in Quetzal 1.4 format

  • Handles media in Blorb format

  • Reads Z code that's embedded within Blorb files

  • Displays Inform 7 metadata when in application mode

  • Input streams for keyboard, mouse, and files

  • Output options for screen, transcripts, memory with nesting

  • You can have split subwindows with paging and scrolling!

  • Makes use of multiple font styles and colors (think console Frotz color scheme)

  • Adds sound effects (AIFF)

  • Supports accented characters and Unicode

  • Timed input options as well as preinitialized input

  • User-defined dictionaries, alphabet tables, and accent tables!

  • You can set default colors and fonts too!

  • Keeps a command history (though this feature is off in the preview)

  • Offers multiple undo options.
