Zfone is a cool tool that uses a new protocol called ZRTP. What makes it special? Well, it keeps your VoIP calls safe without depending on complicated stuff like PKI, key certification, or certificate authorities. Unlike the usual email encryption headaches, Zfone simplifies security for your voice calls.
One of the best things about Zfone is that it doesn’t need SIP signaling for key management. In fact, it doesn't rely on any servers at all! It handles everything in a peer-to-peer way over the RTP packet stream. This means you can use it with any standard SIP phone. But here’s the catch: you’ll only get call encryption when both parties are using ZRTP clients.
The ZRTP protocol is being proposed as a public standard to make sure different SIP endpoints from various vendors can play nice together. Soon enough, we’ll see this protocol integrated into secure VoIP clients. But right now, Zfone lets you upgrade your existing VoIP client to become a secure phone!
The current version of Zfone works on Windows XP, Mac OS X, or Linux PCs. It intercepts and filters all VoIP packets going in and out of your machine and secures them on the fly. You can use different software VoIP clients to make calls without any hassle.
This software detects when a call starts and kicks off a cryptographic key agreement between both parties. After that, it encrypts and decrypts voice packets seamlessly. Plus, there’s a separate GUI that shows if your call is secure! Think of Zfone as a little bump on the cord between your VoIP client and the Internet—an easy way to enhance privacy.
If you're into developing VoIP clients, there’s even a ZRTP SDK available! This lets developers integrate the protocol into their software and hardware VoIP solutions easily. The whole thing is implemented in C programming language for those who want to dig deeper.
