Description

acpid

acpid is this awesome open-source software that helps you manage power settings on your GNU/Linux and BSD systems. It’s totally free and works through the command line, which means it’s super flexible! Built in C, it acts as a non-interactive ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) daemon, making it a handy tool for anyone who wants to keep their system running smoothly.

What Can acpid Do?

This software is designed to deliver ACPI-based power management events. It also supports netlink, which is pretty cool. If you're using ACPI on your device, you'll definitely want to get acpid because it handles events inside the system like a champ. Plus, it’s super flexible and can be extended easily!

How Does acpid Work?

By default, acpid listens for events on the /proc/acpi/event file. When something happens, it automatically runs programs to handle those events for you! You can even tweak how it works through a set of configuration files to match your needs.

Installing acpid

If you're ready to install this software on your GNU/Linux or BSD operating system, you’ll need to grab the source package (tarball) from Softpedia. Just go to the download section above and save that archive on your computer. After that, extract its contents and open up a terminal emulator.

You’ll use the ‘cd’ command to navigate to where you extracted the files. Then run the ‘make’ command to compile everything – this usually takes just a few seconds. Once that's done, you can install acpid system-wide with ‘make install' as root or using sudo. You’ll end up with two executables: acpid and acpi_listen.

Your Next Steps with acpid

If you want to see what options are available with acpid, just type ‘acpid --help' in your terminal. Some of the neat features include setting specific configuration directories, limiting non-root socket connections, increasing debugging levels, running in foreground mode, managing socket permissions, and logging all event activity!
