Description
AIM (AOL Instant Messenger)
AIM, which stands for AOL Instant Messenger, is an app that has been around for quite a while. It was super popular for the first ten years after its launch, but by the time the Mac version came out in 2008, things started to go downhill. People were jumping ship to social media and other messaging apps.
History of AIM
After its initial success, AIM struggled to keep users engaged as they moved on to newer platforms. Even though they tried adding some fresh features to connect with popular social networks, it just wasn’t enough to bring back old users.
User Interface Needs a Refresh
If you look at AIM’s user interface today, it definitely shows its age. The layout feels a bit boring and could use a complete redesign. On the bright side, if you switch to the minimalistic view, managing multiple conversations becomes way easier!
File Sharing and Emoji Options
One downside is that you can't drag and drop files into the app window. Plus, there’s only a limited selection of emojis available—definitely not up to par with what we see in other apps these days.
Integration with Social Media
Knowing that most folks aren’t using AIM much anymore, the developers have made some efforts to connect with more widely used social platforms. You can now chat with friends from Google Hangouts and even add feeds from your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Gmail accounts right on your desktop.
Video Chat Feature
AIM does offer video chat options and lets you snap pictures using your webcam! Just keep in mind that you'll need Adobe Flash Player installed on your computer for this feature.
The Bottom Line on AIM
Overall, while trying to integrate social media is a step in the right direction for AIM, there’s still a long way to go before it can compete with today’s instant messaging apps. Right now, I wouldn’t recommend it over other options since it's pretty outdated and tough to navigate.
