Atmos Weather is a free and open-source app that works on all the big desktop operating systems, including almost all Linux distributions, plus it’s available on Android too! How cool is that? This app really cares about making your experience awesome. You get total control over your weather forecasts and alerts. The interface is clean, it respects your privacy, and there’s no annoying bloatware to deal with.
The best part? You have full control! You can set up multiple locations to get alerts from. Want to know the weather in different cities? No problem! Plus, you can choose what type of alerts you want for each spot and how important they are.
The info about forecasts and warnings comes from reliable sources like the National Weather Service API and the Nominatim API. According to the developers, you’ll get alerts within a minute after they’re published by the NWS API. That’s pretty quick!
I really admire how Atmos Weather seems like a passion project for its developers and volunteers. They stick closely to open-source principles, which is great. However, it's not without its flaws. Since it uses the National Weather Service API, it's mainly geared towards folks in the US or anyone interested in US weather.
The app's website calls it "the ultimate lightweight weather forecast and alert app." I’d say it’s good for what it does but calling it lightweight might be stretching it a bit since it's built using Electron, which tends to be heavier than other options.
By the way, if you're using Linux, be aware that notifications don’t always work perfectly because many Linux distros lack support for Electron notifications.
No matter how you look at it—whether as an interesting project or an average app with some limitations—if you're hunting for a solid open-source weather app for your Android phone or desktop that focuses on US forecasts, then definitely check out Atmos Weather! You can even download it here!
