While official Reddit apps for Android and iOS devices have finally been rolled out, a Windows 10 version isn’t likely to come out anytime soon. Thankfully, though, there are quite a few third-party options out there.
Baconit is one of the more popular ones, and there are many reasons one might prefer it over the alternatives. Not only can it be used on all your Windows 10 devices, but it completely free and open-source.
There are countless ways to design a UI that makes browsing Reddit as easy as possible, which is one of the reasons there are so many third-party clients to choose from. In the end, it is a matter of personal preference, so it is a good idea to try out several of them and see which you prefer.
When it comes to Baconit’s UI, I feel that it is very well designed. Far from being cluttered, everything you need it remarkably easy to access, with large buttons that are all in the right place. The one downside is that there are no alternative color themes to choose from.
Navigating through posts is effortless, and you can switch between multiple Windows 10 devices without missing a beat, thanks to the app’s dynamic UI. Unfortunately, though, some images are resized while others are shown in full resolution, which is puzzling and quite irritating.
With Baconit, you can browse Reddit without missing much of the functionality offered by the website, but some of the more advanced features are not implemented; nothing major, however, so most users should be fine.
The built-in search feature is quite versatile, enabling you to find subreddits, users and posts. However, I would have liked to be able to access a certain subreddit by entering its name directly.
I was pleased to find that Baconit comes equipped with a wallpaper and lock screen image changer, which can perform updates at a user-defined interval, with images grabbed from a specific subreddit.
Baconit has been around for a while now, and it has gone through many changes throughout the years, including a full rewrite. It is the Reddit app of choice for numerous users, but others prefer other third-party alternatives, for various reasons.
It still needs some tweaks, especially when it comes to handling image content, as well as a few additional features. Nevertheless, this app is a great option for Windows 10 Reddit users, and it is worth remembering that it is not only free, but a community-driven open-source project.
