BiglyBT

BiglyBT is a cool torrent client that’s easy to use. It’s built as a fork from the well-known Vuze BitTorrent client, but without all those annoying ads and heavy resource usage.

Requirements for BiglyBT

Before you dive in, keep in mind that BiglyBT needs Java 8 on your Mac to work properly. If you don’t have it already, no worries! The installer will help you download and set it up during the process.

Installation Extras

During installation, BiglyBT gives you some neat options. You can install extra features like “Swarm discoveries,” which lets you see torrents being downloaded by others at the same time as yours. There’s also a “Location provider” feature that shows details about peers connected to your torrent.

Your Default Torrent App

The first time you open BiglyBT, it’ll ask if you want to set it as your default app for .torrent files. Plus, there’s a quick speed optimization test to help find the best settings for your internet connection.

Your Downloads Made Easy

By default, BiglyBT will download all files into Documents/BiglyBT Downloads folder in your home directory. It lets you grab anything from the web as long as there's a torrent or magnet link available.

Your Privacy Matters!

If online privacy is important to you (and we totally get that!), BiglyBT can be set up to use only your VPN connection through its Advanced Network Settings in Preferences.

A Look at Resource Use

This app does use resources: On a quad-core 2 GHz Intel Core i7, we noticed it jumped up to about 150% CPU load but stayed under 500 MB of RAM while downloading five torrents at 40 MB/s on a Mid-2011 Mac mini Server. Not too shabby!
