BitThief is a free and super easy BitTorrent client you can use. What’s cool about it is that it downloads from BitTorrent swarms without using any of its own resources. Yep, it just takes and doesn't give back!
This leads to an important point: the BitTorrent protocol doesn't really stop this kind of behavior. It's clear that there are no real measures against these "free riders" like BitThief.
So, what's the deal with BitThief? It's actually part of a research project by the Distributed Computing Group at ETH Zurich. They’re looking into selfish behavior in distributed systems, especially in peer-to-peer file sharing setups.
If everyone just takes and nobody shares, it could totally mess up the peer-to-peer system. That’s why it's super important for decentralized systems to have some rules that make sure everyone shares their resources fairly.
WARNING: Since BitThief is part of a scientific study, it needs to collect some performance data while you use it. This means sometimes it sends info back to its web server. Don't worry; they only transmit basic details about how long it took to download files of different sizes. They only send a hash of the info hash so no one can tell what you actually downloaded! But still, it's best not to download anything copyrighted.
