Cartes du Ciel

There is a simple beauty is experiencing stars and planets with a naked eye, and perhaps this is why most of us enjoy marveling or just peering into the night sky. If you want to take a step further and explore deeper, then a tool to help with stargazing can go a long way.

Cartes du Ciel, also known as SkyChart is a popular and free open-source planetarium software that allows you to generate detailed sky charts.

Although it’s rather old-school, the interface is intuitive and neatly packs numerous features and options within menus. Upon launch, I was asked to select an observatory and I got the nearest one to me as suggestion. This makes sense, as you would want to get a chart as accurate as possible.

Following this small configuration, I was greeted by a sky chart that is typical for my region. The map is quite detailed, and you have several ways to find any celestial body, be it star, planet, nebulae, asteroid or comet.

As you probably hinted, the app displays the real-time positioning of the sky, which is a big plus if you prefer spontaneous stargazing sessions or, maybe, want to know what that particular bright light is.

You can tailor your sky charts by adjusting parameters such as colors, star sizes, and the visibility of labels. This can be useful if you are focusing on certain types of celestial bodies or want to view particular constellations.

The app can lend a hand with learning more about what you are viewing, as it incorporates data from various astronomical catalogs, providing extensive information about stars, nebulae, and other celestial bodies. You can also keep records of your observations and mark up objects you find particularly interesting.
