So, what’s neat about Catfish? It's a graphical user interface (GUI) that works with various file searching backends. These backends are usually tricky to use and need command-line skills. With Catfish, you don’t have to mess around with complicated commands! It supports popular search engines like locate, slocate, tracker, or beagle.

The interface is super simple and lightweight. You can easily set it up since all the backend options come straight from the command-line settings of each search engine. And guess what? It works great on all GNU/Linux operating systems!

User-Friendly Interface

This app has a modern look because it follows GNOME’s Human Interface Guidelines (HIG). While it’s mainly made for the GNOME desktop environment, you can also use Catfish on other open-source desktop setups like MATE or Cinnamon.

Main Toolbar Features

The main toolbar has everything you need to find your files quickly! There’s a drop-down menu where you can choose where to search, a handy search box, plus two view modes: Compact List and Thumbnails. You’ll also find an app menu that lets you enable full text search or exact match search and show hidden files.

Advanced Search Options

Even though Catfish doesn’t have a settings dialog, it offers advanced options via a sidebar on the left side of the window. You can activate this sidebar through the app menu by selecting “Show Advanced Settings” or by hitting F9 on your keyboard.

Organizing Your Searches

The advanced settings sidebar is pretty awesome! You can organize your search results by modification date—whether that's any time, this week, or even custom dates. Plus, you can narrow down searches by file type! Want only images or videos? No problem!
