Cinnamon is a cool open-source project that gives you a full-featured desktop environment for GNU/Linux operating systems. It’s actually a spin-off of the GNOME Shell user interface from the GNOME project. Cinnamon was built to give users a traditional yet modern and easy-to-use graphical session for their Linux-based systems. You’ll often find it on the Linux Mint distribution.
The team behind Cinnamon is the same hardworking crew that brought us Linux Mint. They created this desktop environment because they were looking for something better than what GNOME offered. The neat thing is, you don’t have to stick with just Linux Mint; you can install Cinnamon on other open-source GNU/Linux systems too! Just grab it from the default software repositories or check out some community ones.
One of the best things about Cinnamon is its layout, which reminds many of us of GNOME 2. It’s super easy to use and packs a punch with its flexibility. You can really make it your own with tons of themes, applets, desklets, and extensions.
A fresh install of Cinnamon usually comes loaded with some handy applications like Nemo (a file manager that's a fork of Nautilus), Muffin (a window manager that forks from Mutter), and others like Cinnamon Settings Daemon and Control Center—all based on GNOME apps but tailored for Cinnamon.
By default, Cinnamon features a single panel at the bottom of your screen. From there, you can access the main menu, manage system tray functions, check out running programs, launch new apps, and switch between virtual workspaces. If you're feeling creative, you can even move this panel to the top edge! Plus, customization is easy—just use applets and themes to shape it into what you want.
In summary, Cinnamon brings together all the power from GNOME while adding its unique features and apps. It provides an accessible graphical interface that keeps getting better for all your Linux distributions.
