Clevit

As convenient as it is, Notepad isn’t always enough, as the classic text editor isn’t exactly packed with features. Fortunately, there are plenty of alternatives out there, whether you’re looking for something relatively simple or a more complex program.

Clevit is a portable, open-source application that offers the basic features you can find in Notepad, with a few useful additions. It enables you to insert images, encrypt documents and export them to a wide range of formats.

It takes no time at all to get used to Clevit, as it sports an intuitive user interface and provides you with easy access to all the main functions. Most of them are available in the toolbar, which can be moved from its default position on the left side of the UI.

Since the program does not need to be installed before use, it is very easy to deploy. However, some of your configurations, such as the toolbar’s position and window's dimensions, are not saved on exit.

Aside from letting you write and save TXT documents, the program also enables you to insert images and export files to HTML, PDF or ODF. What’s more, it supports syntax highlighting for C++.

Documents can be secured using AES 256 to ensure they cannot be accessed without your permission. When encrypting files, you need to provide a password and select a cipher file, which will also be required for decrypting the document.

Clevit gives you the option of translating text to a number of languages, but this feature does not seem to have been implemented yet.

In the end, Clevit isn’t the most complex application out there, but it still offers quite a few more feature that Notepad, so it can serve as a good alternative. However, some features are not yet functional, and some settings are not saved when shutting down the program, so it looks like the application still needs some polish.
