DDRescue-GUI is a super user-friendly application that works on multiple platforms. It's completely free and open source, built with Python to give you a simple graphical interface for the fantastic GNU ddrescue command-line software.
GNU ddrescue is also free and open source, created by Antonio Diaz Diaz. It's designed for data recovery tasks, letting you copy data from one file or block device to another without any fuss.
This application makes it way easier to rescue data from damaged computers than using the command-line version of ddrescue. No more typing complicated commands in a terminal emulator!
If you're ready to get started with DDRescue-GUI, installing it on your GNU/Linux computer is pretty straightforward. You can download the native installer for Ubuntu/Debian-based systems, which only takes a couple of clicks. Or you can go for the universal source package if you're feeling adventurous!
If you choose the source package, things get a bit trickier. First, download the archive and save it somewhere on your computer. Then extract its contents and navigate to that folder.
You'll need to move several files around: copy DDRescue-GUI.py
to /usr/share/ddrescue-gui/
, ddrescue-gui.desktop
to /usr/share/applications/
, and so on for other files like images and scripts.
The inspiration behind DDRescue-GUI comes from KDiskRescue, which isn't available anymore. But don't worry! This app works great on any desktop environment and runs smoothly on both GNU/Linux and Mac OS X.
This software is written in Python and UNIX Shell languages, making it robust and reliable. It has been tested successfully on both 32-bit and 64-bit systems!
