Medical environments benefit greatly from the help of a computer, just like any other domain of activity out there. Specialized picture formats can hold patient data under an universal medical file format, namely the DICOM. In this regard, De-Identification GUI comes with the means to help you remove identification data from DICOM files.
The application is good to go from the moment download is done. However, your computer needs to be fitted with Java Runtime Environment to ensure proper functionality. On the other hand, the package also includes necessary functions to work from a command-line interface, but installation also depends on Java.
The interface is well-organized, with a couple of tabs to define the job, as well as to manage properties. The input folder needs to be filled in with one or more locations where DICOM files are found, with the possibility to set a wildcard filter for easier identification of items of interest, as well as a file extension filter to narrow down results.
For the operation to be successful, you also need to specify a policy URI and workflow file. These need to be under the XML format. Related properties can be managed in the dedicated tab. Here, you can add add and remove properties, but also manage existing values.
There are a couple of policy and workflow files you can use. However, there’s also the possibility to take your time and build a custom policy file. Acting as a stand-alone program, the policy editor comes with a built-in DICOM dictionary for easy management of rules, pixel cleaning, list of policies to include, transformer, and more.
Bottom line is that DICOM files generally contain all patient and operation related details, which might need to be removed in particular scenarios. This is where De-Identification GUI comes in handy, letting you work from a GUI or command-line interface, while also letting you create custom policies for use.
