If you have been neglecting PC maintenance and have accumulated some data over time, then the idea of organizing them might seem unappealing. Going through the files manually is possible, but could end up to be too much time and energy draining.

DFORG or datefile-organizer is a tool designed to help you sort out media files based on the creation data. While it doesn’t work with all file types, it can come in handy for anyone who regularly watches movies or has a relatively large photo collection.

The program comes with a minimalistic and straightforward interface that is unlikely to give you any troubles, regardless of your experience with organizing tools. The GUI consists of a single window where you can specify the source folders along with the target directory. The app also offers you the possibility to copy the files to the target folder, an option you can enable by marking the Copy check mark.

To process the data, the program checks the files’ metadata and organize the files based on a single criterion, year and month. It would have been nice if the app included more filters or, at least, allow you to change the date format.

It is worth mentioning that the application creates a log directory in the target folder, where you can explore the status of the files copied and categorized. The logs are quite minute and detail the files that have been processed, date of creation and the reason it was or was not copied.

While DFORG does most things automatically, you will be happy to learn that it filters out non-media files and duplicates. If the source directories included non-media files that you attempted to copy or dupes, you are likely to view them in the not-copied-not-media.log and respectively not-copied-repeated.log files.
