Your operating system knows exactly what’s coming and going through your network adapter. All known pages and domains are stored in a HOSTS file, which can be used to your advantage to block potentially malicious websites. For even more operations to perform, DNSAgent comes as a configurable Windows service to manage domain access and manipulation through your PC.
One of the first things you notice is that there’s no setup involved. However, the target PC does need to be fitted with at least .NET Framework 4.5. The package contains all necessary files to work with. Apart from the executable to manually start the service, it’s also possible to install the service to automate it, with a corresponding file to uninstall it when necessary.
The application’s core feature is to help you manage incoming and outgoing traffic by enhancing the capabilities of your HOSTS file. This is done through management of a couple of CFG files, one for the general options, and one for the exact rules. Given the formats, you can even edit them with Notepad.
There are multiple ways to set up your rules. However, these can be quite flexible since the program comes with support for IPv4 and IPv6, non-standard listening ports, usage of DNSPod HttpDNS protocol, immediate return of A/AAA records or redirecting to a custom server, custom TTL settings for local cache storing, IP whitelisting, compression pointer mutation, as well as regular expression matching and replacing.
