If you played the Dominoes board game when you were little or even like to play it now, here’s some good news: Dominos Pro is a streamlined OS X game that makes it possible for you to play Dominoes on your Mac.
The bad news is that you can’t actually use the tiles to build yourself a domino show, where the involved tiles are toppled one on each other in a spectacular “domino effect”, so, at least in this respect, part of the fun is lost.
Getting passed this moment of sadness, the game follows the same principles and norms of the classic Dominoes tile game. While playing Dominos Pro, you will have to place the tiles from your initial collection that have the exact matching number of points as the ones placed at the ends of the Dominoes chain.
As expected, if you don’t have the required tiles to do so, you will have to draw another tile from the “boneyard”. The number of points received depend on the sum of pips at the exposed ends of the chain being multiple of five (5, 10, 15, 20, you get the idea).
The winner is, of course, the first player that reaches one of the four score thresholds, namely one hundred, one hundred and fifty, two hundred, or two hundred and fifty. What’s more, at the beginning of each game, you can also choose one of the five levels of difficulty that range from easy to hard.
At the beginning of each Dominoes game, you can also choose if the first move should be a “max double” or “random”, and to view or hide the rules options from the game’s menu.
Unfortunately, while the game itself is quite nice and while it manages to keep the spirit of the classic Dominoes game unaltered, it won’t be so conservative and restrained with your Mac’s resources. During our tests, we have experienced some exaggerated numbers in terms of memory usage. Thus, at one point, while we were away from our testing machine, the game managed to consume 3.6 GB of RAM while simply idling.
Not only that, Dominos Pro also used more than 40% of our Mac’s CPU resources regardless of the situation involved. It may also be relevant to say that we have tested the 1.5 version of the game, and we strongly advise both the development team to fix it and users to be cautious while playing it.
To conclude, as it stands, Dominos Pro is a very entertaining game that you will certainly love if you are a fan of the original Dominoes game. Our single complaint is regarding the way Dominos Pro uses your Mac’s resources, an issue that we hope will be fixed in the next updates.
