DrQueue is a fantastic Open Source software for managing render farms. It makes handling tasks, like rendering images, super easy by distributing them on a per-frame basis. Pretty cool, right?
This software works on multiple platforms including Linux, FreeBSD, Irix, Mac OS X, and Windows. It's distributed under the GPL license and comes with three main tools: the master, slave, and drqman.
The master acts as the server where all tasks hang out. This is where computers running the slaves report back about their task successes or failures. The slaves, which run on each node of your render farm, keep you updated on their load average. If their load is low enough (as set by you), they’re ready to take on some rendering jobs!
The third tool, drqman, is your go-to GUI for controlling jobs and computers in the farm. You can easily reprioritize tasks, stop them if needed, restart specific frames, and change what frames get rendered. It uses GTK as its widget library to keep things looking sharp!
You’ll find that DrQueue supports popular tools like Maya, Mental Ray, Blender, BMRT, Pixie, and 3Delight. For other tools not listed here, you just need to whip up a small shell script to integrate them.
If you're wondering about reliability—DrQueue has been tested in real production environments! It stands tall as a stable alternative compared to commercial options while being open-source under GPL.
If you're using DrQueue and finding it helpful (and saving some cash along the way), consider making a donation! Every bit helps us improve this project even more.
