Keeping your data secure is quite challenging, especially when sharing a PC with others or transferring important files across the web. Encrypting them is a good idea, and a simple application that can get the job done quickly is likely to come in handy.
EG File Encryption is a useful application that fits the bill, as it enables you to secure your files with just a few mouse clicks, and it features a minimalistic, clean user interface.
When launching the program for the first time, you will be prompted to provide a master password that both regulates access and is used to encrypt files. Naturally, even though this key can be changed at any time, you should ensure you remember which password was used to secure all of your files. On the bright side of things, the application comes with a password hint function to help you memorize the security key better, or at least remember it in times of need.
When encrypting a single item, the process is as simple as can be. You only need to provide its local path, as the protected file will be saved in the same folder automatically. What's more, this can also be done by dragging files or folders over the program window.
Although the program is capable of encrypting the entire contents of a certain folder, the directory is archived before encryption, which means it is not possible to secure multiple items and save them separately in one operation.
It is not specified which encryption algorithm is used, making it difficult to assess its strength. Nevertheless, the documentation available online is quite extensive, so novices should certainly consult it if they run into any issues.
Last but not least, the main window can be resized and maximized, just in case you want a full view of the set of features or want to properly fit it into a particular resolution.
Of course, EG File Encryption also allows you to decrypt files that have been protected, and the process is simple enough, but you should make sure you remember the master password that was used when the file was encrypted.
On the whole, this is a promising encryption tool that still needs a few improvements. It does its job quite well, but it lacks a few important functions.
