Simply having an antivirus installed doesn’t keep all your data safe. Threats can mean a lot more than just malicious files, such as individuals snooping through your files while you’re away. In this regard, Encrypter wants to help add an extra layer of security over important text strings through a straightforward encryption operation.

Before you can even install the application you need to make sure your computer is fitted with .NET Framework, even though it’s a default feature in modern Windows iterations. Launching it brings up the main window which stores all functions you need to secure your text and bring it back to a readable form.

Note that the application is only capable of encrypting text. Unfortunately, there’s no file support, so input strings need to either be pasted from the clipboard or manually written down. The same goes for input, and it would have been useful to see at least plain text file support for processing entire documents faster.

After a first run at encryption you’re asked whether to decipher the message, but it’s rather against the purpose since you just got it secured. Decryption of existing text is done in a similar manner, even though buttons don’t really update their tags. Encrypted content is automatically detected, so attempting to encrypt a secure text makes it readable instead.

There are no security options to configure, or other algorithms to use besides the built-in one. In case you don’t want to keep the window active at all times, it’s possible to assign a hotkey command from the Properties panel so you access it easily from any location.

Bottom line is that text encryption adds a bit more security to documents and even conversations. Encrypter is a suitable tool to use in this regard, even though it feels a little rough around the edges. It’s method of approach with no file support makes it especially handy for temporary conversations.
