With File Name Tag Explorer you can organize your files using tags. This is a feather-light and portable application that features a few intuitive options for accomplishing this task.

It's wrapped in a classical-looking UI made from a large window neatly structured in four parts, where you can create the index by adding as many folders as you want, view and filter tags, as well as check out files.

After indicating directories, File Name Tag Explorer automatically generates tags for each selected folder, based on the words found in each file name existing in that location. Auto-tags can be disabled, though, and you can create custom ones.

The utility can be asked to display files for all or any tags you type. It lets you open files, copy or move them to other locations, change their name, as well as remove them from the computer. These operations can be performed in batch mode, and you can tick an option for selecting all items from the list. There are no other notable settings available here.

Since it's wrapped in a portable package, you can save the program files in any part of the hard disk or on a USB flash drive, in order to directly launch the tool on any computer with minimum effort and no previous installers. More importantly, it doesn't modify Windows registry settings.

On the other hand, File Name Tag Explorer features only a few basic options for tagging files. For example, it doesn't let you sort numerous tags. We must also take into account that it hasn't been updated for a while. Nevertheless, you can test it for yourself, since it's free.
