FlightGear is a complex flight simulator project designed for use in academic environments, as an industry engineering tool, pilot training platform, as well as an engaging and challenging desktop flight simulator.

FlightGear comes with support for standard 3D model formats and offers you the option to configure the simulator via XML based ASCII files. Moreover, the creation of third-party extensions for FlightGear is straightforward and does not require too much reverse engineering.

Moreover, FlightGear comes with three primary flight dynamics models on top of which you can add new dynamics models and interface to external flight dynamic models.

JSBSim is a generic, 6DoF flight dynamics model used for simulating the motion of the flight vehicles. JSBSim is useful for batch runs, but is can also be used as the driver for large simulation apps that include a visuals subsystem.

Aircrafts can be modeled via XML configuration files where the mass properties, flight control properties and aerodynamics are well defined.

YASim is another flight dynamics model that is part of FlightGear and which is in charge of simulating the effect of the airflow on various parts of the aircraft. Consequently, the simulation is based on geometry and mass information combined with performance numbers for the aircraft.

UUIC, the third flight dynamics model, extends the code in order to simulate the behavior of the aircraft under icing conditions.

FlightGear’s comprehensive and accurate world scenery data base includes over 20,000 real world airports, accurate runway markings, placement and approach lighting, accurate terrain, complete scenery, lighting and more.

Before initiating the simulator FlightGear offers you the option to choose the desired aircraft and airport and allows you to easily configure and customize the simulator and environment with ease.
