Furl-Save

Furl-Save is a handy Perl script that helps you back up your categorized and keyword-tagged web bookmarks along with their page contents. You can store everything on the online service furl.net. This makes it super easy to keep track of all your favorite sites!

System Requirements

If you're thinking of using Furl-Save, here’s what you need:

• RedHat Linux 7.3


• RedHat Linux 9.0


• Fedora Core 4, 5, or 6 on Intel x86


• Microsoft Windows XP with ActivePerl installed

What You Need to Get Started

Requirements:

• Perl version 5.6.0 or higher


• An account on Furl

Your First Run of the Script

The first time you run the script, it will create a configuration file template in your $HOME/.furlsaverc directory. Make sure to edit this file to include your Furl username and password. Just a heads up: on Unix systems, this file is created with access rights set to 0600, so only you can access it.

How It Works After That

The next time you run the script, it logs into Furl for you and downloads an XML file. This file contains all the details about your categories, bookmarks, comments, and more! You’ll also get a ZIP file with saved page contents. All these files are saved in the current working directory of the script with a date timestamp.

For example, if you save an archive on September 15th, 2005, it’ll look like this: furl-archive-20050915.zip.
