Description
Gamin
Gamin is a cool tool that helps you keep an eye on files and directories. Think of it as a watchdog that alerts you when something changes in your files or folders. It’s part of the FAM (File Alteration Monitor) system but with some neat tweaks!
Main Goals of Gamin
The main goals for this project are pretty straightforward:
- Make the security model of FAM simpler
- Simplify the code so it's easier to work with
- Offer an API and ABI compatible replacement for FAM
- Fix issues like using too many resources
Testing with Inotify
Another cool feature is how Gamin works with the inotify mechanism. This helps improve the existing dnotify monitoring system that's already part of the Linux kernel.
Linux Focused, But Open to Ideas!
If you're wondering about compatibility, right now, Gamin is mostly tied to Linux. Portability isn’t the main focus yet, but if you've got ideas or patches to help with that, they’re totally welcome!
A Bit of History
Gamin actually comes from a previous project called marmot, created by James Willcox and Corey Bowers. They've made some significant changes to turn it into a lightweight replacement for FAM. And hey, if you know French, you'll get a kick out of how 'gamin' relates back to 'fam' and 'marmot'!
