Gitter is an awesome online tool that helps you set up private and public chat rooms for your GitHub account. It makes chatting with other developers super easy, whether you're working on the same project or just share similar interests!
The cool part about Gitter is that it has a desktop app for Mac OS X, so you don’t have to keep opening your web browser. Plus, if you’re on the go, there are also client apps for iOS and Android devices.
To jump into using Gitter, all you need to do is log in with your GitHub credentials and give the app permission to connect to your account. There’s a free version available, but keep in mind it limits you to one private room and only keeps two weeks of chat history. If you want more features, like unlimited access, there’s a monthly fee.
Setting up new chat rooms is a breeze! You can either define your own rules and permissions or use existing GitHub repositories. And if you want some privacy? No problem! You can create separate rooms just for private chats.
The Gitter chat panel isn’t just basic; it also supports Markdown and syntax highlighting! If you're unsure about how to use Markdown, simply activate the Markdown Help panel to see all the commands available. Plus, Gitter can connect with lots of other services through its flexible API and even lets you set up custom webhooks!
The Gitter application gives you access to everything offered by the Gitter web service, but without messing up your web browser. The design is pretty user-friendly too! You can quickly create new chat rooms, join existing ones, send messages with Markdown support, get notifications—basically everything you need!
