What is GNU SIP Witch FOR LINUX?

GNU SIP Witch

GNU SIP Witch is a super cool, open-source software that helps with office telephone calls. It’s free and works on lots of systems like Linux, BSD, Solaris, Windows, and Mac OS X. It's part of the GNU Telephony project, which makes it pretty neat!

What Does It Do?

This software is mainly a command-line tool designed to set up a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) server. It has some handy features like call distribution, call forwarding, call coverage, call transfer, call holding, hunt groups, and ring groups. So if you need to manage calls in your office easily, this tool has got your back!

Peer-to-Peer Calls Made Easy

With GNU SIP Witch, you can make P2P calls even when you're behind NAT (Network Address Translation) firewalls. Plus, it supports secure telephone extensions and lets you use peer-to-peer video and audio extensions without any interruptions.

Customizable Command-Line Options

The program comes packed with various command-line options that let you customize your experience. You can specify the address of a SIP interface or load specific modules. Other options include disabling local user accounts and setting priority levels. You can even enable public access mode or make the service restartable!

Installing GNU SIP Witch

If you're ready to install GNU SIP Witch on your GNU/Linux computer, there are two easy ways to do it! The first way is to open the package manager on your system. Just search for GNU SIP Witch and click install.

The second option is to download the source archive directly from Softpedia or its official website (check the link at the end). This method needs some extra steps but it’s not too hard!

Requirements for Source Installation

If you choose to install from sources, keep in mind that you'll need the ucommon and libexosip2 packages first! After downloading the archive file:

  • Save it somewhere you'll remember.

  • Unpack it.

  • Open a Terminal app and navigate to where you unpacked it (e.g., cd /home/softpedia/sipwitch-1.9.3).

Now run ./configure && make. This will set everything up for your hardware and operating system. Once it's done compiling successfully, just run make install as root or use sudo make install. And voila! You're all set!
