What is Gpart FOR LINUX?

Gpart

Gpart is a handy tool that helps you figure out the primary partition table of your PC's hard disk. You might need this if the primary partition table in sector 0 gets messed up, is incorrect, or even deleted. With Gpart, you can guess what the right setup should be and then write that info to a file or device. Pretty cool, right?

What Can Gpart Do?

This tool supports several filesystem types that it can guess. Here’s a quick rundown of the supported (guessable) filesystem or partition types by Gpart:

  • DOS/Windows FAT (FAT 12/16/32)

  • Linux ext2

  • Linux swap partitions versions 0 and 1 (for Linux >= v2.2.X)

  • OS/2 HPFS

  • Windows NT/2000 FS

  • *BSD disklabels

  • Solaris/x86 disklabels

  • Minix FS

  • Reiser FS

  • Linux LVM physical volume module (by Heinz Mauelshagen)
