Description

GPlates

GPlates is a super cool open-source geology software that lets you visualize plate tectonics over time. You can explore a bunch of geological, geographic, and tectonic data. Plus, you can check out vector and raster images! The best part? It works on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.

Explore Geological Data Easily

This tool has a clean layout but don’t be surprised if it takes some time to get used to all its features. If you need help, there’s an online manual and tutorials to show you how to use everything effectively.

Different View Modes for Better Visualization

You can play around with different view modes like 3D orthographic, rectangular, Mercator, Mollweide, and Robinson. Need to zoom in or out? No problem! You can grab the globe with your mouse and rotate it however you want. There's even a full-screen mode for when you want to immerse yourself in your work.

Interactive Time Control

With GPlates, it's easy to display data on a globe or map set at any point in time. The app has handy control buttons that let you adjust the time settings, start or stop animations, and move backward or forward through time.

Measure Distances and Modify Geometries

You can measure distances between points, draw vertices or points, move them around, insert or remove them as needed. Want to change the geometry of something you've selected? Just split it up or modify the reconstruction pole!

Importing Raster Images Made Simple

If you're working with raster images like BMPs, GIFs, JPGs – you name it – GPlates has got you covered! You can create virtual geomagnetic poles too and load data from GPML files along with ESRI Shapefiles.

Exporting Your Work Effortlessly

You can choose what data to export such as reconstructed geometries or motion paths. Depending on what you're exporting, GPlates supports various file formats like NC, GRD, TIF, IMG, CSV...you get the idea!

A Great Tool for Professionals

Packed with plate-tectonic reconstructions and GIS capabilities for visualizing raster data over time makes GPlates an exciting tool! Its advanced features will keep professionals engaged while they explore different geological scenarios.
