Everybody knows Notepad, the popular text editor that comes embedded in the Windows OS as a pre-installed application. As easy as it might be to call to Notepad when it comes to editing a text file, some users prefer deploying and using other third-party tools with a more generous offer in terms of functionality. GreenPad is one of the many alternatives to Notepad, an open-source text editor ready to meet your needs when it comes to working with text, CSS or HTML files.
The application requires no installation, so it is ready to go as soon as you launch it. You get to see the main window, which is very similar to that of Notepad. It comprises a large editing area to load, preview and edit input files. As mentioned before, plain text files, CSS and HTML documents are supported. Moreover, the editor is compatible with multiple character encoding modes, including Unicode 14.
GreenPad features syntax highlighting and line numbering, two of the features programmers and developers cannot live without. It can open HTML files and mark tags, while also placing an EOF (end-of-file) tag at the end of the document. To change the syntax highlighting mode, just change the document type from the “View” menu.
Aiming to make it easier for users to manipulate text, the application features additional editing tools and options. With just a few clicks, you can insert the current date and time, and change or invert the case of the selected text. Moreover, you can also trim trailing spaces, strip the first or the last characters in all words, or mark a text selection as a quote.
Aside from the helpful editing functions, GreenPad also comes with more advanced search capabilities. It allows you to quickly jump to a certain line in the opened file and find certain keywords within a large document, providing support for regular expressions.
GreenPad is a fork of an older open-source project, but it brings to the table a few more features in comparison to Notepad. It might just be the right functions to make you switch from Notepad and use GreenPad on the long term. While it surely could integrate more features, such as support for multiple tabs, this tiny application is promising.
