Heartbeat is a cool little app that takes your Spotify experience to the next level. While Spotify lets you scrobble tracks to Last.fm so others can see what you're listening to, Heartbeat connects directly to your Spotify app. This means you can either play tracks shared by friends or stream your own playlist to people who are following your ID.

How Heartbeat Works

The neat thing about Heartbeat is that it lives in your status bar. From there, you can easily share your music or jam out with someone else. If you choose to share, Heartbeat generates an ID for others to follow. If you're in the mood to listen along with someone, just enter their ID.

Once you're connected, you'll be able to see the username of the person whose stream you're following—this info comes straight from their macOS user account. However, you won’t see if anyone else is tuning into your stream.

What You See on Heartbeat

In both scenarios, Heartbeat shows off the cover art of the current track right in its main panel. But here’s something interesting: it doesn’t show the song or artist name! Plus, if you're following a buddy's stream, Heartbeat takes control of Spotify for you so that it reflects what they’re listening to without needing any extra clicks from you.

ID Generation and Privacy

A unique feature of Heartbeat is how it generates IDs as consecutive numbers based on how many users are active at any time. Since this connection isn’t locked down tight, feel free to enter any number up to what was generated for you. This way, you can listen in on others’ streams without them even knowing!
