How to Make an Auger
So, here’s a simple way to make an auger: you start by cutting these annular-shaped pieces (think of them like washers) from some flat material. Then, you’ll slit them along a radius and stretch them out before welding them onto a circular shaft. Pretty straightforward, right?
Understanding Dimensions
If you're aiming for a finished auger diameter of 'D', remember that the outside diameter (OD) of your annulus needs to be bigger than 'D'. Why? Because when you stretch it to create one turn of the screw, it’s going to shrink in diameter. The same goes for the inside diameter (ID) of the annulus; it has to be larger than the shaft's diameter.
The Role of Pitch
The allowance for these changes really depends on what we call the pitch of your auger. Picture this: the outer edge of your annulus should match up with how far we measure around the flight during one full revolution. This distance will actually be longer than just the circumference of the auger itself! And guess what? The extra length relies on that pitch.
