Heroes of Umbra is a fun and free multiplatform 2D side-scroller game that mixes role-playing elements into the action. It takes a lot of inspiration from classic console games like Castlevania and Mario, so you can expect plenty of jumping on platforms and battling quirky two-dimensional creatures.
The story is pretty straightforward but still keeps you hooked. You get to play as a custom character who used to hunt down enemies on their home planet, Odorus. As a bringer of justice, your mission is to restore balance and harmony to your beloved world.
Things take a twist when you receive a mission to deal with The Apprentice, an assassin who needs to be stopped before causing more chaos. However, you find yourself stranded on an unknown island and struck by amnesia! You can't remember what your mission was, but one thing’s for sure—you’re determined to finish what you started.
One cool feature of Heroes of Umbra is that it supports both single-player and multiplayer modes through LAN. This means you can tackle the campaign solo or team up with friends for some co-op fun! The game offers various pixelated worlds for you to explore, complete with different day and night settings.
The gameplay has lots of exciting elements like leveling up, managing your health pool, and improving attributes such as power, stamina, and wisdom. You can also customize keybindings and abilities to boost your health, jump higher, or attack better. As you defeat enemies, you'll earn experience points; each level gives you extra stat points and skill points that you can allocate in the game's menu.
The game's HUD lets you keep track of important stats like HP, experience level number, special abilities, and even a handy map for easy navigation around the world. Plus, there’s room for customization—change your character's name, skin color, hairstyle, or gender!
Overall, Heroes of Umbra feels like a modern take on classic Super Mario-style 2D platformers. You'll get to progress in levels and attributes while exploring different fantasy worlds by bouncing around platforms. Though it's still under development and not completely finished yet, this game shows tons of promise! If you're ready to dive in headfirst into this adventure, check it out here!
