HUAWEI E220 Installer

HUAWEI E220 Installer is a handy tool for anyone using the HUAWEI E220 USB modem on Linux. It's not something you can buy, but it lets you change settings like your password, dial-up phone number, and username right in the /etc/wvdial.conf file after you've installed it. Just a heads up: if anything goes wrong while you're using this software, I'm not responsible. So use it at your own risk!

Installing HUAWEI E220 Installer

To get started, first extract the tar.gz file and change your directory to where that file is located. You'll need to be a superuser (su) or use sudo for this part. You can try both methods to see which one works best for you.

For installation, make sure you're logged in as root and run these commands:

• make special (for Mandriva and Sabayon)


• make install

Dialing with wvdial

After that, you can start dialing by either running wvdial huawei, or typing sh /etc/mod.sh in your terminal. If you prefer a graphical interface, KPPP is also an option.

I’ve tested this software on 16 different distributions from the top 20 listed on Distrowatch. It worked well there! However, it doesn't seem to work with FreeBSD, Mepis 5, gOS 2.0 Beta, or Zenwalk 5.0.

Instructions for OpenSUSE Users

If you're using OpenSUSE, here’s what you need to do: make sure you're root first and then copy and paste these commands into your terminal:

tar xzvf lib.tar.gz

cp 99-huawei.rules /etc/udev/rules.d/

cp huawei-mobile.sh /lib/udev/

mkdir -p /etc/chatscripts/

paste all other commands here...

Edit Your Configuration File

You’ll also want to edit the wvdial.conf. Just open it with gedit or kate as root at /etc/wvdial.conf. Here’s some text you might want to include:
