Chemistry and physics are undoubtedly complex fields, and students might have a hard time understanding the numerous theories and formulas. This is why HuLiS might come in handy.
HuLiS is a handy application that requires Java in order to run - i.e. JRE needs to be installed onto the host computer prior to running the software.
The graphic interface of HuLiS is divided in two separate panels, colored differently so as to make it clear to the user what type of calculation can be performed: the left panel is called Huckel and manages molecular orbits, whereas the right section is called Lewis and deals with resonance structures.
Accessing the left area, users can build a molecule by simply clicking the drawing area and creating various type of atoms. The default parameters can be re-adjusted by switching to the Change section and right-clicking the atom that needs to be customized. Once the modification has been performed, the atom color will be updated accordingly.
One can further personalize the created molecule by making visible a series of information, such as numbering, parameters and charges. Once the design is satisfactory, it can be exported to various types of formats, including images, so they can be included within science projects or used for demonstrations.
On the right side of HuLiS, the Lewis panel uses the already created atoms and automatically generates resonance structures, while also displaying the weight of each structure. Switching to the Expert mode, users get the chance to build specific singlet spin coupling.
Depending on the HuLiS area they accessed, users can generate detailed reports containing either Huckel or Lewis results - the former specifies data like the structure type, the number of atoms and π electrons, whereas the latter mentions the number of Lewis structures and bibliography that should be cited if users want to integrate the results in their work.
To wrap it up, while HuLiS is not created for novices, its functions can be a great help to all those who want to illustrate, explain or better understand the Huckel theory and the resonance structures.
