In this regard, IFEO Modifier aims to help you fight malicious content with its own weapons.

First of all, the application skips you the necessary time invested in an installer, and is good to go from the moment download is done. As such, you can carry it around on a thumb drive to use on other PCs as well.

The package also contains two dummy files you can use to test out functionality, in case you’re not really familiar with the IFEO key. This type of option is often used by malware products to replace specific registry entries corresponding to regular processes with their own, leaving you wondering what’s wrong.

Sure enough using the application to fight back malware products is meant for advanced users, because there’s no scan process involved, so you need to know which is which. It’s best to create a backup of the registry hive you want to change, and save all work before putting the process in motion to avoid any accidental loss of data.

Creating a new IFEO or Image File Execution Option is easily done through the application’s set of features. First, the target executable is selected from a drop-down menu which enlists all running processes, or you can browse for a different one to target it whenever it starts. The second field is the EXE to run instead of the target. There’s the possibility to create more entries, and these changes persist through system restarts, or shutdown operations.

On an ending note, IFEO Modifier is not really your everyday tool with which to keep your PC clean, but rather an advanced method of manually tracking down malicious programs and fighting back. Nothing is lost during the operation, but it’s best to create several backups just in case.
