ifile is a handy tool for anyone drowning in emails. If you have a busy inbox, sorting through hundreds of messages can take forever! This is where ifile comes in. It's a Bayesian mail filter that learns how you like to organize your emails and helps sort them accordingly.
The cool thing about ifile is that it’s not just about sorting spam from non-spam. Even though it's no longer getting updates, it still does a great job filtering your emails based on different criteria. It’s super helpful when you want to keep your inbox organized without all the hassle.
To get started with ifile, you'll need to install it using Terminal.app. Don’t worry; it’s pretty straightforward! Just use the commands: “./configure”; “make install” or “gmake install.” If you're curious about what options are available during setup, just run “./configure --help.” And remember, there’s an INSTALL file included in the download that has all the details you might need.
One of the best things about ifile is its compatibility with different email clients. You can use it with Emacs/Gnus, Procmail, Pine, Slocal/.maildelivery, MH/NMH, and EXMH. If you want to learn how to set it up with any of these clients, check out the developer's website HERE.
Once you’ve got ifile installed and ready to go, you'll need to train it a bit before it can really help you out. There’s a tutorial available where you can learn how to build your ifile database and start filtering your messages more effectively HERE. The more you use it, the better it'll get at classifying and organizing your emails!
The neat part? You don’t have to set up any complicated rules. Ifile watches how you organize your messages and tweaks its system when things get mixed up. It learns from your actions—so the more you use it, the smarter it gets!
If at any point you want to clean up or remove ifile's configuration data from your system, just run these commands in Terminal.app: “make clean”, “rm -f config.cache config.log config.status Makefile.” Simple as that!
If you're dealing with loads of emails and need help organizing them by category, then ifile is definitely worth checking out! It sorts not only regular messages but even those pesky spam emails by type for better accuracy.
