iGrabNews is a handy utility for Mac OS X that helps you browse and download articles from Usenet newsgroups on different servers. Just a heads-up, this project isn't being developed anymore, so keep that in mind!
Right now, there are two versions of the iGrabNews app: the stable release and a beta release. The stable version needs PowerPC compatible architecture, while the beta works with newer OS X versions like Yosemite.
The bummer is that we found out during testing that the beta version had some serious issues. It couldn't connect to any newsgroup server and kept crashing. But on a brighter note, the stable version ran smoothly, which means you can still use it if you have an older Mac!
If you want to get started with iGrabNews, you first need to connect to a newsgroup server. From there, you can fetch all groups or just those that have specific terms you're interested in. After browsing through the results, you can subscribe to groups by hitting Command+U or by using the contextual menu.
In the Servers & Subscribed Groups panel, you'll see all your subscriptions. You can start downloading articles from each group by accessing the function via right-clicking. Once your downloads are done, just double-click on any message to view its content.
If you're lucky enough to connect to your newsgroup servers, using iGrabNews is pretty straightforward! Even without any user documentation in the software archive, most features are easy to access through contextual menus.
For your convenience, iGrabNews includes simple yet effective search and filtering tools. These tools help you find specific items or groups much faster so you spend less time searching!
