In Between is a platformer game in which you are immersed into the dying protagonist’s reflections upon his life while having to figure out the reason you are actually there.
As is the case with other platformer games out there, In Between is also a game in which you have to guide an avatar and jump between suspended platforms and over obstacles in order to advance. Also like many other games of this sorts, In Between is based on solving harder and harder puzzles by manipulating your surroundings.
But at this point, all other similarities fade into distance, as In Between can be considered more than just a game, but rather more of an interesting experience, one that provides you with the power to control gravity, which is and will always be cool.
Of course, you can physically move objects around, but most of the time you will be using the gravitational force to do the moving work for you and also for finding your way through the addicting puzzle-maps.
But, even before you have the opportunity to really get to grips with the game’s physics, a totally different aspect will surely capture your attention. Right from the start, you will be invited into a beautifully crafted world of dense and mysterious sensations, achieved partly thanks to the hand painted sceneries and fluid video effects, as well as partly thanks to the game’s engaging soundtrack and sound effects.
In no time, it becomes crystal clear that this is a game backed by a great deal of work and commitment, and, because with each level you unravel a small piece of the protagonist’s struggle for existence, chances are that a minute or two alone will be more than enough for you to be hooked.
Once you get passed the few levels and you will realize the big grin on your face, yet another aspect becomes evident: this will not be one other easy game that you will power through in 5 minutes. A little bit of thinking and eye-hand coordination will certainly be required, as you will have to control both the protagonist’s movements and gravity itself with the help of the WASD and arrow keys from your Mac’s keyboard.
While we could continue to ramble with no end about this game, we must inevitably conclude that while In Between doesn’t actually revolutionize the platformer genre, it goes to show what a little imagination, a simple story with the potential to gain your sympathy and empathy, good tastes in terms of visual and audio effects, can go a very very long way.
