Text editors help take quick notes, or even perform complex operations which involve a lot of words. There are some basic Windows tool to use in this regard. However, you can also benefit from the simplicity of alternatives like inScribe TxT Editor, with tab support, formatting options, and advantages of portability.

The application relies on Java Runtime Environment to function, so you need to be sure it is installed on the computer you want to use it on. On the other hand, there’s no setup involved, meaning registry entries are not modified during use, and you’re also able to carry it around on a thumb drive, along with your text documents.

As far as the visual design is concerned, features are wrapped around a classic, simple interface, with most of the space representing the edit pad. As mentioned above, you can work on multiple projects at a time, each one opened in its own tab.

Sadly, opening existing files is only done through the built-in browse dialog, because drag and drop is not supported. When it comes to saving, you’re only limited to the plain TXT format. Be sure to manually save your work before quitting, because there’s no prompt to warn you that you’re about to lose all data.

Edit options have no special elements, allowing you to copy, paste, or cut text selections. Font options are also limited, since you work with plain text, and you can only change font style, size, bold, or italic.

Text wraps automatically according to the window width, but there’s a minimum limit. Moreover, the text pad itself is rather poor in information provided, with no line numbering, line counting, not to mention character, or word counters.

All things considered, we come to the conclusion that inScribe TxT Editor is a lightweight text editing tool, which comes with a shallow set of features overall. The main advantage is tab support, which makes the only difference between it, and regular text editors already at your disposal through Windows default features.
