Archivists with large databases may feel the need for an extra filtering criterion, which is where Windows’ built-in support for tags comes into play. However, since there is no easy way to add them, the open-source community took it upon itself to release a lightweight solution in the form of Intag, an intuitive context menu-based tagging system for folders.
The setup experience is incredibly quick and straightforward, letting users avoid cumbersome and lengthy installation wizards. Once its executable is run, interaction with the program is done simply by selecting a file folder and bringing up its dedicated right-click context menu item that summons a draggable window through which one can add the required tags that suit the content of the folder.
Afterwards, viewing those tags in action is only a matter of enabling them in Windows Explorer’s sorting system, which makes it easier for photographers to group their collections using multiple keywords that fit a certain theme, such as nature, leaves, or flowers.
In order to make the tagging process easier, the program’s dedicated editing window retains each added tag for future folders in need of specific descriptive keywords. To remove a certain tag, one can simply click on it, instead of manually deleting the words in an input box.
Despite the app’s quick setup experience, users need to bear in mind that the executable needs to be placed in a dedicated program folder on first boot, since its context menu trigger will look for it in its initial location, which does not allow you to move the app itself around.
Unfortunately, while tags can be easily added or removed by clicking on them, there is no option to delete them altogether, which may lead to a tag menu overpopulated with outdated tags at an unavoidable point in time.
Finally, users may have to wait a minute before tags are detected by the file explorer, which the developer does warn about in the program’s documentation, however, it is an issue that needs to be underlined here nonetheless.
If you are organized by nature and want to have an extra filtering layer to the sorting criteria for folders, then Intag’s ease of use can help you assign tags quickly and painlessly, letting you find and group the right file categories with little effort.
