KDG Folders Size calculates the total files, folders and space occupied on the disk, so that you can find out the largest items, examine information, and figure out how to proceed to free up space. This application is based on WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) and it doesn't require installation.
It's wrapped up in an attractive interface with a clear-cut structure, where you can begin by specifying a drive or directory to scan. On task completion, the tool can be instructed to sort the largest files and folders by taking into account the parent directory or total size.
These are displayed in a hierarchical view, where each parent folder can be expanded to explore subdirectories and files. Moreover, you can launch a selected folder in a new KDG Folders Size instance, or visit its location in your default file browser.
Saving this information to plain text documents basically generates a list with the full paths of all files and folders, along with their size, which is automatically determined by the utility (in kilobytes, megabytes, or gigabytes).
A more convenient method is to export the data to HTML format: you can view the names of files and folders, which are organized in a simple tree view, as well as click file links (normal URLs) to launch files. You can click folder links (bold URLs) to explore containing files and subfolders, and to learn their sizes and dates of last modification.
The program didn't hang, crash or prompt error messages in our tests. However, it used a very high amount of CPU and RAM, had a slow response time to user commands for basic tasks (e.g. expanding folders, opening the right-click menu), and slowed down other applications that were running on the computer.
Plus, it doesn't show sizes in the main application window, and the listing generated in text files makes it difficult to decipher the subtree of each folder.
To sum it up, KDG Folders Size offers a simple solution for analyzing disk space usage and saving information to file. However, it's too demanding about system resources.
