LaCie Private-Public is a lightweight security application whose purpose is to help you create an encrypted volume where you can store your private and confidential information. Sensitive data is protected against unauthorized viewing with the aid of a password and AES-256 encryption algorithm.

The utility doesn’t store configuration data in your computer and write entries in your Windows registry, so you may run without administrative privileges. Copying it on a USB flash drive or other devices is also possible.

Generating an encrypted volume is nothing more than a piece of cake. LaCie Private-Public gives you the possibility to specify the size (in MB or GB) that you want to allocate to your new volume.

In order to secure the information included in the volume, you need to set up a password. You can make the utility show or hide the password characters. Before creating the volume the tool displays an overview with all your configuration parameters tweaked up to that point (volume size and encryption algorithm).

The best part about the encrypted drive is that it can be used just like other hard disk drives on your computer. You can browse throughout your files’ content directly from Windows Explorer.

As soon as you have completed all the steps included in the wizard and generated a new volume, you can find LaCie Private-Public sitting quietly in your system tray. A single click on its icon gives you quick access to a set of features: open or dismount the volume, or check out the configuration panel.

When it comes to configuration settings, you can mount volumes as read-only and automatically dismount all volumes when user logs off, screen saver is launched and the computer has entered the power saving mode.

An automatic dismounting mode can be triggered in case no data has been read/written for a custom number of minutes. You may use the force mode to enable an automatic dismounting even if the volume contains opened files or directories.

Last but not least, the utility is able to open the Explorer-window upon successfully mounted volumes, close all Explorer panels of volume being dismounted, and preserve modification timestamp of the file containers.
