Layer Four Traceroute, or LFT for short, is a super handy tool that does something called 'traceroute'. It’s actually a lot faster than the typical Van Jacobson method and works well with many types of packet-filter based firewalls.

LFT isn’t just about speed, though. It also comes packed with features like AS number lookups, loose source routing, and netblock name lookups. Even though it’s been around since 1998, its development has kicked back into gear recently!
Why Choose LFT?
This tool is like an all-in-one traceroute solution. It can launch different types of probes using both UDP and TCP layer-4 protocols. So instead of only sending out UDP probes to get ICMP “TTL exceeded” responses from hosts along the way, LFT can also send TCP SYN or FIN probes to target specific services.
What Happens Next?
After sending out those probes, LFT listens for messages like “TTL exceeded”, TCP RST (reset), and other useful hints from firewalls or gateways along the path. This way, you get more insights into how your packets are traveling.

LFT really stands out because it can tell the difference between TCP-based protocols (both source and destination). This makes the stats you gather a bit more realistic.
