Lime OCR is a Windows software application whose purpose is to help you extract text from scanned images and save it to plain text file format. The utility makes use of Tesseract, an open-source OCR engine.
The GUI looks easy to work with. All configuration settings are embedded into a single panel, so there’s nothing hidden under its hood. A help manual is not included in the package, which means you need to experiment with the built-in features in order to understand how it works.
The utility comes with support for various image formats, such as ARW, DCR, GIF, ICO, JPEG, PNG, PS, RAD, SGI, TGA, TIFF, SVG, SUN, PCD, NEF, ART, and DCX.
Lime OCR allows you to select the images that you want to process and pick the saving directory. The tool is also able to merge the text comprised in all pictures into a single plain text file.
What’s more, you are given the possibility to normalize the photos before converting them in order to resolve contrast problems, rotate the pictures to different angles, crop just an area of the images before converting them, as well as automatically rename all output files. The aforementioned configuration settings can be applied to a single file or all of them.
You can preview the content of the document directly in the main window and zoom in or out of it. Tests have shown that the utility needs extra time in order to finish the extraction process. However, it does not eat up a lot of CPU and memory so the overall performance of the system is not burdened.
All things considered, Lime OCR provides a simple software solution for converting scanned paper books into electronic files, and can be mastered by beginners and professionals alike.
