LLDP beacon provides a simple LLDP broadcasting service for Windows that allows system administrators to send data packets to all the connected interfaces once every 30 seconds.
The application relies on the Link Layer Discovery Protocol (in short, LLDP), which is specifically designed to allow network layer devices, such as switches and bridges, to obtain information about other network-attached workstations and nodes via SNMP. It is worth noting that LLDP beacon requires WinPCap to gather data, which must be installed beforehand.
LLDP beacon has no standard interface, but its syntax is simple and easy to remember. The "-h" argument specifies the hostname to use, and the "-s" parameter targets a specific name of the operating system. However, these are not mandatory. If not present, LLDP beacon proceeds to parsing wmic to extract the names of the host and the OS.
LLDP beacon can also be deployed as a Windows service by running a simple command: "lldp-beacon.exe install". Removing the service is as simple as installing it: users must type in the "lldp-beacon.exe remove" command in the console window.
The packet sent by LLDP beacon contains various pieces of information, including the name of the local computer, its MAC address, network interface details and used ports, the operating system version, and more. LLDP beacon starts searching for LLDP-enabled network adapters and sends the data packet it built to each, once every 30 seconds.
