Mussel, short for Miniature Underwater Strange Squid Eradication Liner, is a contemporary game with old-school 8-bit looks that follows the last couple of year’s trend where the world has an obsession for portraying squids as being the bad guys.

Basically, Mussel is an arcade, side-scroll, and shoot-‘em-up game in which you have to shoot or, in ultimate cases, elude swarms of alien-like squid enemies.

In your epic underwater battles, you will have your reflexes put to the ultimate test by the multitude of squids capable of coming towards your ship in circular or other strange, but ultimately predictable motions.

In order to play, you must only remember the following: press the Z key at the game’s start-up, move your ship around with the help of the arrow or WSAD keys, and fire using either Z again, or the space key.

While the game’s actual gameplay isn’t what you would call complex, it does a very good job of keeping your entertained with its vector graphics, simple controls and spectacular explosions.

While the colors are great, and we have very much liked the overall graphic effects, this is definitely a game not recommended for people that suffer from epilepsy as the screen will flash at high rates during your legendary battles with the squids.

The graphics, the sounds, and the gameplay all contribute to summoning the nostalgia for 80s and 90s games, but the soundtrack is what really sets this game apart.

The soundtrack that can be described as kind of an 8-bit funky bitpop-chiptune track that really gives the game a rhythmic-action feel ,and does a great job of keeping you focused and engaged.

Taking all things into consideration, while the game itself doesn’t have the potential to keep you entertained for long periods of time and, from an objective point of view, doesn’t offer something more than a simple gaming experience, it has an undeniable cool factor to it, partly due to its graphics and partly thanks to its energetic soundtrack.
