Mutter is a cool open-source project that steps in to replace the Metacity window manager in the GNOME desktop environment. It brings along some neat compositing features and other attractive perks. You'll find this software bundled with the GNOME desktop, giving a stylish touch to all your windows.
So, what's the big deal about Mutter? Well, without a window decorator or manager, any desktop setup would look pretty boring and wouldn't work well at all! The decorator handles a lot of important stuff like letting you minimize, maximize, or close a window. Plus, it shows you the title of each window.
This app uses GTK+ to draw those nice window frames. But here's the catch: it doesn't really throw around the term "window manager" for users to get confused about. It sticks to its role and doesn't pretend to be a whole desktop environment. There are other projects like Openbox and Fluxbox that do try to act like full desktop environments while being called window managers.
Speaking of lightweight managers, they can actually run alongside full desktops like GNOME, Xfce, LXDE, or even Cinnamon and MATE. While Mutter is primarily used with GNOME by default, it's flexible enough to work with just about any open-source desktop environment!
Another cool feature is that it also serves as a compositing manager. This means it gives each window its own off-screen buffer for smoother performance.
As of September 2013, there was an exciting update: Mutter got ported over to the Wayland display server! You can find it available for download on Softpedia as a separate package called Mutter Wayland. This version will be the go-to choice when GNOME makes its switch to Wayland's new window system.
In short, Mutter plays an important role in making your GNOME experience smooth and user-friendly. It helps you manage your open windows effectively while adding style—making your overall desktop experience way more enjoyable!
