If you are a retro game fan, then you certainly know all about the legendary classic arcades from the early 70s and late 80s, namely Pong, Space Invaders, and Pac-Man.
If you like all these three classics in particular, then brace yourself, because this is going to be a good one: PACAPONG is a modern mash-up of the three arcade legends in question.
Put shortly, PACAPONG is a fast paced arcade game in which you and your opponent have to fire Pac-Mans at each other and shoot or dodge Space Invaders figurines. Oh, one more thing, you will also have to watch out for the menacing Donkey Kong’s flying barrels.
At first all of this might seem confusing, but the basic principle is as simple as it is clever and engaging. You and your opponent need to use Pong-styled paddles in order to launch Pac-Mans into its home maze. As Pac-Man makes it way randomly through the maze, the player at the other end must catch it, and, in turn, launch it once again into the maze.
This goes on for one minute, in which both players must fend off or shoot down Space Invaders, the idea being to fill your score bar as much as possible before your opponent manages to do so. Some little tricks to remember, inside the maze there are some pellets that Pac-Man eat, thus, adding points to your score or triggering attacks from the Space Invaders figurines on your opponent’s side of the screen.
That’s about enough jibber jabber about the gameplay and time for some real instructions. Here are the essential controls: “WASD” or arrow keys to move the Pong paddles, “ESC” to quit, “F” to toggle fullscreen, “R” to restart, and “M” to mute the music.
The gameplay is action packed and has great potential to engage the players into a brutal vanity-competition while the soundtrack is perfectly fitted for both our modern “remix” era and also for the 70s or 80s period.
In touch with the origins of the three games involved, the visuals retain a touch of retro-feel while the 1080p resolution and 60fps stand as solid reminders that this is actually a modern game.
As a final note, while we are sure that PACAPONG won’t make you stay at home and forget about your social needs, if shared with the right friends and at the right moments, it can spark at least a couple of smiles and some interesting discussions, at least for short periods of time.
