pass-winmenu offers the perfect solution for users who love to customize their system environment and like to have full control over the functioning mechanisms of their tools and applications.

pass-winmenu is a Windows application meant to ensure the safety and easy retrieval of your passwords. This open-source project is the Windows correspondent of pass. The original Linux project (pass) is a super-customizable tool with an open-standard environment that further allows users the freedom to extend its default capabilities.

Same as pass, pass-winmenu stores all your passwords in GPG-encrypted files, in a typical directory structure. The GPG standard (short for GnuPrivacy Guard) is a well-known and qualitative suite, mainly used in Linux distributions, that handles the cryptographic encryption of highly sensitive data.

The security levels provided by this type of implementation are trusted because they offer additional layers of encryption. First, there are your individually-encrypted passwords, and secondly, there is your GPG key, unlockable by your master password only.

pass-winmenu requires an initial setup. However, after configuring the tool's settings, you will be good to go and ready to synchronize your passwords across different devices and platforms.

First, you must create a directory where you will save your passwords. This should be located in the same place as pass-winmenu.exe. After that, you must generate a new GPG key. You can easily do that from PowerShell, using the gpg --gen-key command. Then, in the root of your password directory, you should save the email address you used for creating your GPG key.

After configuring your environment, you can start using pass-winmenu right away. Moreover, using Git, or other more mainstream platforms — SVN, Dropbox, Google Drive, ownCloud, etc. — you can synchronize your passwords. For GitHub, you can create an empty repository and connect your password store to it. For other hosts, you can import there, locally, all the GPG keys you created for each password.

All things considered, pass-winmenu is an excellent program and a super-valuable utility. It is free, offers a lot of flexibility, and thank to its modular traits, it can easily be integrated with other systems, or it can be customized.
